There will NOT be a built in S-Video port on the US
PlayStation. In
fact, there won't be one on the Japanese version or the European version
either. So by introducing a model that will be identical across the globe
(except the ROM's), Sony has been able to bring the cost of the unit
down.
This really isn't as bad as it sounds. You'll still get S-Video, but
you have to buy the Sony cable. It won't be much more expensive than buying
separate S-Video and audio cables. And since S-Video is hardly used in
Europe, they won't have a wasted port and can instead buy a
SCART/Euroconnector cable.
The Sony S-Video cable will deliver the same picture quality as
any other S-Video cable, and should be available at launch.
